BS 8214:2026 Resets the Rules for Fire Door Hardware Installation
The revised BS 8214:2026 code of practice, published in March 2026, brings the most significant update to fire door installation guidance in over a decade. Crucially, it coincides with the withdrawal of BS 476-22, meaning fire door products now require EN 1634-1 test evidence — older certificates referencing the withdrawn standard are no longer sufficient for compliance. The new code places far greater emphasis on the complete tested door system: leaf, frame, ironmongery, intumescent seals and threshold gap must all be specified and installed as a matched assembly. For trade customers working on commercial premises and higher-risk buildings, retaining accurate documentation of the tested system is now a legal requirement under the Building Safety Act's Golden Thread rules.
Product Spotlight
Commercial Espagnolette Bolts & Window Locking Gear
Espagnolette bolts are the backbone of multipoint locking on commercial casement and tilt-and-turn windows, providing simultaneous engagement at multiple points along the frame for a secure, draught-tight closure. They're specified across offices, schools, healthcare facilities and residential blocks wherever BS EN 14351 window performance is required. Key selection criteria include gearing ratio, shoot bolt projection, and whether the window opens inward or outward — matching these to the frame profile prevents costly callbacks. Door Spares stocks a comprehensive range of espagnolette bolts, friction stays, window handles and restrictors for same-day despatch on orders placed before 3pm.

Installer Tip
Check the Certificate Standard Before Specifying Fire Door Ironmongery
With BS 476-22 now withdrawn, any fire door ironmongery certificate referencing that standard should be treated as obsolete for new installations — request EN 1634-1 evidence from your supplier instead. When reviewing a tested system certificate, confirm that the ironmongery listed (closer model, hold-open device, letter plate, etc.) matches exactly what you're fitting: substituting even a 'similar' product voids the tested assembly and creates a compliance gap. If a building manager asks you to swap out a component for a cheaper alternative, explain that the entire door system's fire rating depends on using the specified products. Keeping a copy of the test certificate on file satisfies the Golden Thread documentation requirement and protects you if a fire safety inspection takes place.
